Please Take Note of Dental Attrition Symptoms

Posted .

The alignment of your teeth plays an important role in the appearance of your smile, as well as your ability to efficiently bite, chew and grind food. Misaligned teeth are often prone to chips, dental fractures, and chronic conditions that affect the integrity of the tooth enamel.

As one misaligned tooth starts to wear on another you might not even notice a problem. Yet as the tooth enamel gradually wears down it can start to expose an increasing amount of the sensitive dentin layer beneath. At the same time, you might also start to notice a change in the surface texture of the tooth.

This condition, which is known as dental attrition, can also start to compromise the structural integrity of the tooth. This could increase your chances of suffering a severe dental fracture.

The location and severity of the compromised tooth enamel will influence the treatment strategy Dr. Dickson Ufomata and his team recommends.

A minor case of dental attrition might be able to be repaired by applying a simple dental filling. This might also call for him to make minor edits to the offending tooth by performing a dental contouring treatment.

If the area of dental attrition is large, or the tooth has a newly developed cavity he might recommend a dental crown restoration. This is even more likely to be the case if another surface of the tooth was previously repaired with a dental filling.

If you live in the Lexington, Kentucky, area and you suspect dental attrition has started to affect one of your teeth, you should call 859-232-8883 to have it examined and treated at Leestown Dental Center’s dental office.
